IT Training Industry & Economy - Social Welfare States - Kerala Free IT training for differently abled Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, April 5 The Kerala State IT Mission is preparing to constitute a technical committee to evolve programmes under the Insight project to impart free IT training to individuals with mental and developmental problems. Insight is an ambitious project aimed at addressing the lives of over three lakh visually challenged people of the State. According to the IT Mission Director, Mr Rathan U. Kelkar, the committee would comprise IT experts and persons working in the field of skill development of the differently-abled. COORDINATION“Although it will essentially be a State-level committee, we will also coordinate with individuals and NGOs from across the country working in the field of IT for the differently-abled,” Mr Kelkar said. Insight project officials are now trying to rope in renowned software developer Dr Arun Mehta, who led the team that developed the communication software for physicist Dr Stephen Hawking who suffers from degenerative motor neuron disease. “We have contacted Dr Mehta and he has consented to conduct a week-long workshop on imparting basic IT skills for children with autism. “This workshop will also help our trainers to conduct similar IT-based programmes for autistic students,” said Insight Coordinator Mr James P. Mathew. He said the workshop is expected to be held before June. The Insight project was launched in 2007 with ICT training for the visually challenged. More than 100 visually- challenged individuals have been provided basic computer and Internet application under the project, jointly implemented by the State IT Mission and SPACE (Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment). The Insight training facility has jointly been set up by SPACE and Kerala State IT Mission has already trained a team of 12 master trainers in this direction.
