Mangalore, April 16

The performance of Hubli division of South Western Railway (SWR) zone for 2008-09 has been quite encouraging despite several constraints and recession in domestic and international markets, according to Mr Adesh Sharma, Divisional Railway Manager, Hubli Division of SWR.

The Hubli division of South Western Railway (SWR) zone registered a growth of 18 per cent in goods earnings during 2008-09.

A press release said here on Thursday that Mr Sharma informed this at the 54th railway week celebrations of the division in Hubli on Wednesday.

Goods earnings

It said that goods earnings of the division stood at Rs 3,390 crore during 2008-09 as against Rs 2,864 crore in the previous fiscal, registering a growth of 18.36 per cent. During 2008-09, the cumulative total earnings stood at Rs 3,578 crore (Rs 3,031 crore).

Stating that recession had taken a toll on the loading, he said in spite of best efforts the loading could reach only 35 million tonnes as against the target of 42 million tonnes.

Iron ore slump

The demand for iron ore came down and prices of the commodity also fell by about 60 per cent.

In Hubli division, 70 per cent of the traffic is of iron ore and around 65 per cent of the total iron ore is meant for export purposes, he said.

20% growth

During the year, Hubli division registered a growth of 20 per cent in number of passengers carried.

The passenger earnings increased to Rs 157 crore (Rs 139 crore) in 2008-09.

The release quoted him as saying that Hubli division is one of the major revenue earning divisions on Indian Railways.

Mr Prem Chand, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Hubli Division of SWR, spoke on the occasion.
