Jet asks some operations staff to relocate

Our Bureau

Mumbai, April 16 As part of a cost restructuring exercise, Jet Airways plans to rationalise operations staff in smaller bases such as Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore.

According to sources, the airline has asked surplus staff on the operations side like managers, pilots and other roster staff to relocate to bigger bases like Mumbai and Delhi.

“They are looking to centralise operations from bigger bases. So, in the process, staff will be asked to relocate. Those who don’t will perhaps eventually be made redundant or laid off,” said a source. However, Business Line could not ascertain the number of people who could be affected by this move. The staff will be given a month or two to make their decisions, he added.

On Thursday, some media reports also suggested that Jet was likely to shut down all its major metro city offices carrying out ticket sales and back-end services. The move is likely to affect 400 employees, the report said.

While declining to confirm the restructuring plans of the airline, the company spokesperson, in an official statement, said, “The airline is taking a proactive approach to improve its viability. However, we are not commenting on any of our restructuring initiatives at this point of time.” The spokesperson also pointed out that the aviation industry is undergoing a severe crisis worldwide and in India.

Jet had gone for a similar restructuring exercise when it took over Air Sahara (now JetLite). Equally, when Kingfisher bought out Air Deccan, it had gone in for a similar rationalisation when it was up against surplus staff.

Last year, the Chairman of Jet, Mr Naresh Goyal, had to reinstate over 1,800 cabin crew employees following protests and political intervention. At present, it is engaged in a legal battle with the Sahara Group over payment relating to the buyout.
