Kannur to get KSIDC growth centre

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, April 21

The Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) is in the process of establishing an industrial growth centre in Kannur district.

The centre is located at Valiyavelicham, 6 km from Kuthuparamba town, and is spread over 250 acres. The basic infrastructure there is being created jointly by the Centre and the State Government, according to KSIDC officials.

KSIDC has earmarked separate parks for apparels and other small-scale units. Works on widening of the approach road, installation of a 11 KV sub-station, implementation of a water supply scheme and setting up of an effluent treatment plant are under way.

In fact, a 100 per cent export-oriented unit by Maryan Apparels has already started functioning in the apparel park, providing employment to 1,000 people. Besides, Rubco Ltd, a cooperative initiative of the State Government, has started two divisions in the centre for manufacturing of footwear and cycle tyres and tubes.

hosiery unit

Fitz Fashion, a garment making company, has signed a memorandum of understanding with KSIDC to start a hosiery unit in the centre. The unit is expected to become operational in June this year.

The officials said that KSIDC planned to go in for further built-up area inside the apparel park for attracting more companies in the textiles sector. The opening of training centres by Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) and the Indian Institute of Fashion Technology (IIFT) in Kannur will provide a big impetus to the textiles industry in the district.
