Thiruvananthapuram, April 28

The Public Works Department of the Kerala will implement projects worth Rs 1,000 crore in a time-bound manner in the current year.

Addressing a workshop organised to review the department’s works here on Tuesday, the Minister for Public Works, Mr Mons Joseph, said that projects would be prepared on a priority basis in each division before May 31. The projects would be granted administrative sanction before June 30 and technical sanction before July 31.

The Minister said that measures would be initiated to complete delayed projects in 2010 itself. A project worth Rs 30 crore for construction of footpaths would be included in the scheme of things. It would also be ensured that pre-monsoon works were completed in time.

KSTP project

The Minister informed the meeting that the Government had approved the second phase of the Kerala State Road Transport (KSTP) project. The Government would borrow funds for the implementation of the project from a financial institution within the country or outside, for which the Centre’s clearance was awaited.

The allotment for roads in the current year’s budget would be utilised for repairing existing roads in all the districts. For the purpose, a list of such roads would be prepared in advance, Mr Joseph said.

The workshop was attended by officers from the level of chief engineers to executive engineers. Similar workshops have been scheduled for officials at the lower levels in each district. Besides, MLAs will also be called for meetings at the final stage to help prepare the priority lists of projects in their constituencies.

The entire department from bottom to top needed to be activated, he said.
