Successful leaders have the ability to convince their followers to undertake revolutionary change even if it involves brutality, according to Mr Sridharan Mani, CEO & Director, American Megatrends India Private Ltd (AMI India).

AMI India, founded in June 1994, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of AMI USA. AMI India started of as an offshore software development R&D wing of AMI USA, and has been involved in rendering embedded solutions and software development services to customers worldwide.

Mr Mani was addressing the management students of Vel Tech Dr. RR & Dr. SR Technical University. He spoke on how good leadership can direct employee strength towards attaining business goals and how the right mix of technology helps to empower communication internally and externally. The lecture was organised as part of the BL Club lecture series presented by Indian Overseas Bank.

“People often confuse leaders with managers. The key distinction between a leader and a manager is that leaders bring change and managers manage change,” said Mr Mani. On this platform, technology acts as a differentiator! The end game for any company as leaders and technologists was to partner with the business and not simply serve as an order taker. True collaboration between business and IT could yield lower operating costs, increased capability, a best-in-class talent base and innovation — a sustainable business advantage.

The fundamental quality that a good leader must possess is the passion to undertake a given task A good leader should be eloquent in communications that can attract and move crowds. Apart from these basic qualities, charisma gets a lot of weightage as it is a magnetic personality that attracts people.

Mr Sridharan adds: “Few things which a fine leader should triumph over are the inability to discriminate, the urge to blame others and self-deception.” Querying the students on what makes a victorious leader, he said: “A successful leader always fights for the right values — courage, integrity, ethics, flexibility and discipline.”

Running and managing a corporation with transactional leadership requires realistic planning founded on the ability to assess opportunities and threats and establish guidelines to channel efforts and sound decision-making skills to create unity of purpose.

Leaders should be adept at organising and creating the structure of the organisation by matching people with tasks, delegating authority, and allocating resources to complete work and accomplish organisational objectives. They should motivate the task force by providing incentives to the members of the organisation to perform their delegated duties according to plan. They should be in control, ensuring that the organisation is attaining its objectives by setting standards for performance, measuring what has been accomplished and comparing this to the anticipated results.

“Developing a high commitment culture based on a shared vision and mutual sense of trust to achieve the highest potential available with the proper planning of the communication tools lays strong steps of success” he said. Also present at the event were Dr Sundaresan, Prinicipal, and Dr Valaramathy T.S., Head of the Department.
