IT cost reduction tops agenda for 50% of CIOs: E&Y

Our Bureau

New Delhi, May 1 Almost half the CIOs (chief information officers) surveyed cited IT cost reduction as ‘most important’ in their agenda for 2009, according to an Ernst & Young survey.

But this does not necessarily indicate an investment reduction, as technologies that help lower cost and improve operational efficiency will be favoured by the CIOs.

According to a survey initiated by CIO KLUB along with Ernst & Young to capture key IT trends and investment patterns across various sectors in India, nearly 76 per cent of the CIOs listed information security as a key concern and priority for 2009-10.

The ‘Enterprise IT investment trends survey 2009: Planning during adversity’ points to an expected dip in IT spending while, investments, if any, focus on technologies favourably impacting cost and improving operational efficiency. The survey comprises the views of 123 CIOs in India.

“The survey findings underscored that though IT cost reduction is a priority, it will not necessarily translate into an overall investment reduction. Technologies that lower cost or improve operational efficiency shall continue to be the favourite of CIOs, though their evaluation may be stricter,” it said.

In the current economic scenario, CIOs are looking at all aspects of IT to decrease spends and increase operational efficiency.

This includes implementation of relatively new technologies such as green IT, IT virtualisuation, mobility/PDA and consolidation. According to Mr Pinakiranjan Mishra, Partner, Ernst & Young, “The current economic scenario has presented CIOs with not only several challenges, but also opportunities to improve their overall IT footprint and effectiveness.
