Letters Short of expectations The first 100 days of the US President, Mr Barrack Obama, have fallen short of expectations. On the economic front, Mr Obama is adopting a no-nonsense approach. He has introduced stimulus plans, bailed out automakers and banks and plans more stimuli. But, protectionism is a factor of Mr Obama’s policies that would come to haunt him. The spirit of free trade and the benefits thereof are stripped to consumers worldwide because of this, but other nations too practice protectionism, including India. But, that can be no reason for the US to practice the same, being a world superpower. Curbs on offshore hiring, visa restrictions do not augur well for world business, especially at this juncture. Overall, Mr Obama’s deeds have been weak and reactive. And, for India, we have more reasons to worry than rejoice. Sudha Desikan, Tiruchi More Stories on : Letters | Politics
