Andhra Pradesh revises Bt-II cotton seed price to Rs 750

Hyderabad, May 3 Andhra Pradesh has put the price of Bt-II cottonseed at Rs 750 (for a packet of 450 gm) and that of Bt-I at Rs 650.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, the Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister, said that the orders to this effect had been issued, asking the seed manufacturers and distributors to sell the seed at the stipulated prices,

It was Andhra Pradesh that mandated the seed manufacturers to sell the Bt seed at Rs 750 as against Rs 1,850 a few seasons ago.

This had led other States to bring in relevant orders, revising the price of cottonseed.

He said the State was planning to encourage farmers to grow oil palm in 75,000 hectares.

The target was to cover 3.75 lakh acres through drip irrigation.

The Minister said the State was getting ready with seed for the upcoming kharif season, which was likely to cover 82.10 lakh hectares.

Foodgrains

“We are expecting a foodgrain production of 112.32 lakh tonnes in the season. We are procuring 25.63 lakh quintals of seed,” he said. For the full year (2008-09), the State produced 2007.18 lakh tonnes of foodgrains. “Compare this against the 133 lakh tonnes in 2004-05, the year Congress Government assumed power,” the Agriculture Minister said.

The State had decided to put on hold ‘rythu chaitanya yatralu’ (farmers’ awareness campaign’ where ministers and other people’s representatives used to take part through out the State. “Instead, we have asked the officials to conduct similar programmes to prepare the farmers for the kharif season,” he said.
