Trough pair lends relief from heat

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram, May 4 A north-to-south trough/wind discontinuity over central India and a counterpart west-to-east trough over north India continued to provide localised relief from heat wave conditions.

The north-to-south trough/wind discontinuity (where opposing winds tend to merge) ran down from east Madhya Pradesh to south Tamil Nadu through Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and interior Andhra Pradesh with an embedded cyclonic circulation over east Madhya Pradesh.

WESTERLY INFLUENCE

The west-to-east trough lay extended from west Uttar Pradesh to north Bay of Bengal through east Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal, which was a spin-off from a prevailing western disturbance with cooler north-westerlies.

A cyclonic circulation each has been traced to over west Rajasthan and Punjab as part of this trough formation.

These circulations helped keep at bay the rampaging desert winds from West Asia as well as the Thar.

The western disturbance and its induced upper air cyclonic circulations are expected to cause scattered to fairly widespread rain or thundershowers over the western Himalayas (Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh) during the next two days.

DUST STORMS

Dust storms or thunderstorms accompanied with isolated squall are likely at a few places over the plains of northwest India during this period. Punjab, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi are expected to be brought under cooler climes in this manner.

Over east and North-East India, rain or thundershowers have been forecast during the next two days in view of the movement of the western disturbance.

Isolated thunder squall is likely over West Bengal, Sikkim, Orissa, Jharkhand and Bihar.

Isolated rain or thunderstorm has been forecast for even Central India during this period thanks to the presence of the trough/wind discontinuity.

In this manner, the weather formations in north and central India would provide the much needed respite to some of the places worst hit by the ongoing heat wave.

HEAT WAVE

Despite this, heat wave conditions prevailed in parts of west Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) update said on Monday.

Scared away from the north and central India, the heat wave was intent on seeking out fresh pastures to grown into, and peninsular India (parts of Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu) were targeted on Monday.

Isolated places in Madhya Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and north interior Karnataka also witnessed hot day conditions.

LIKELY TO LIFT

Officially, the heat wave was largely confined to parts of Vidarbha on Monday; but these conditions may lift even here as the trough/wind discontinuity further entrenches its presence in the region.
