Shipping/Ports Agri-Biz & Commodities - Cashew States - Karnataka Mainline container vessel calls at New Mangalore
Cashew boxes: The mainline box ship, CMA CGM Okume, unloading raw cashew containers at the New Mangalore port on Monday Our Bureau Mangalore, May 4 The first mainline container vessel of the current financial year – m.v. CMA CGM Okume – with raw cashew cargo from West Africa called at the New Mangalore Port on May 3. A press release by Mr S. Gopalakrishna, Traffic Manager of the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), said here on Monday that the mainline vessel from Port Benin in West Africa, which called at the port on Sunday, started its operation of unloading 512 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) of raw cashew containers for distribution among various cashew processing units situated in and around Mangalore. The release said that the advantage of mainline vessels directly calling at the port is that it brings down the transit time and handling cost. It will take only 23 days between Mangalore and West Africa, whereas vessels via Colombo will take 40 days. Quoting Mr P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, the release said: “The increased number of mainline vessels calling at the port has resulted in upward growth of container traffic.” The port handled 4,816 TEUs of (95,087 tonnes) of raw cashew containers during 2008-09 as against 3,591 TEUs (69,850 tonnes) during the previous fiscal.
