Mohan Ram, Director, Institute of Distance Education, University of Madras; and Dr C.V. Jayakumar, Principal of the college, at a seminar organised in the college. Our Bureau Chennai, May 4 There are three important steps to be followed in the research process. First, the researcher should identify the problem which could either be related to a social issue or to an organisation. Previously, identification of the problem itself was a problem for researchers. The advent of information technology had made the researcher’s job simpler, said Dr G. Mohan Ram, Director of the Institute of Distance Education, University of Madras. He was addressing a workshop on ‘Application of SPSS for Research and Article Publication,’ at the Sri Sairam Institute of Management Studies. SPSS is the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Secondly, after identifying the problem, relevant data has to be collected. The data could be classified into two broad types, namely, primary and secondary. The data collected should be reliable. Thirdly, the collected data should be analysed and evaluated using both quantitative and qualitative tools. SPSS tools, according to him, were user-friendly and were widely used in industry and research. Practical knowledgeQuoting Socrates he said, “The purpose of education is to dispel the error and discover the truth.” Education, he said, should be knowledge-oriented in order to meet global demands. He stressed the importance of applying practical knowledge to various issues and research projects. He also explained that a perfect report should be authenticated and reflect the problem correctly. This would help in decision-making in an organisation or a research area. He also explained the role and importance of distance education in the corporate world. Learning through the distance education mode accounted for 10 per cent of the opportunities in both private and Government organisations, he said. The main objectives of the workshop were to sensitise researchers about the publication of articles and enable participants to understand the application of SPSS. Forty faculty members from prominent management institutes, besides research scholars, attended the workshop. Dr K. Maran, Director of Sri Sairam Institute of Management Studies, welcomed the gathering. Also present at the event were Prof V.R. Rajamanickam, Director of the Sri Sairam Group of Institutions, and Dr C. V. Jayakumar, Principal of the college.
