Cement Cement demand slows down in April Our Bureau Mumbai, May 4 Cement demand seems to have tapered off in April, if the production and dispatch figures of major cement manufacturers are anything to go by. After a robust demand in February and March, Holcim group companies ACC and Ambuja Cement marginally added to inventories by selling less than what it had produced. ACC produced 1.84 million tonnes (mt) and sold 1.80 mt in April. However, compared with last year the production was up 2 per cent while sales rose 4 per cent. Cumulative production for the first five months of the calendar year was up at 7.44 mt against 7.04 mt in the corresponding period last year, while sales were at 7.44 mt (7.02 mt). Similarly, Ambuja Cement produced 1.65 mt and sold 1.54 mt. Production and dispatches were up 7 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively, when compared with the corresponding period last year. Cement production between January and April was marginally down at 6.61 mt against 6.64 mt recorded in the corresponding period last year. Sales rose to 6.25 mt (6.23 mt). Aditya Birla Group with a production capacity of 35 mt a year through its flagship Grasim Industries and UltraTech Cement had produced and sold 3.18 mt in April. However, sales and production were up 17.4 per cent and 16.4 per cent, respectively, when compared with April 2008. The ACC stock on the BSE was up 0.38 per cent at Rs 655, while Ambuja Cement gained 1.55 per cent to Rs 82. Grasim Industries and UltraTech gained 1.09 per cent and 4.18 per cent to Rs 1,798 and Rs 591, respectively, on Monday.
