Mumbai, May 12 Microsoft Corporation will be compelled to lay off more employees if the economic downturn worsens further, a top company official indicated.

The company had earlier announced plans to shed about 5,000 jobs globally courtesy the economic meltdown.

“Presuming the economy hopefully stays as bad as it is and doesn’t get dramatically worse, we will finish our plan, but if it gets dramatically worse again, we will look at things again,” the Microsoft Corporation Chief Executive Officer, Mr Steve Ballmer, told reporters at a news conference organised by Manipal Education, here on Tuesday.

Recently, there were reports that Microsoft has laid off 55 employees (or one per cent of its headcount) in India.

However, Mr Ballmer has said that the company continues to hire people in several areas, both in India and other locations.

“There are areas where we are continuing to add people. …these are global additions, so it is a little hard to separate our work globally from our work in India,” Mr Ballmer said.

Microsoft is ‘mostly through’ with the process of shedding 5000 jobs, added Mr Ballmer.

Mr Ballmer also dismissed as a “rumour” recent speculation that the company is looking to buy German software company SAP.

“That is just market rumour and market talk, and I will leave it at that,” he said. “I have nothing to say of rumours of acquisitions, positively or negatively.”

Separately, Manipal Education has tied up with Microsoft for EduNxt – a new system for distributed learning in India.

EduNxt will be launched first for Sikkim Manipal Univeruty’s distance education students in July 2009, Mr Anand Sudarshan, Chief Executive Officer, Manipal Education, said. For this initiative, Manipal Education has also partnered with BSNL.
