Tata Motors launched the ‘World Truck’ range in Mumbai on Thursday. — Our Bureau Mumbai, May 28 Tata Motors unveiled its ‘World Truck’ range, developed jointly with Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicles of South Korea, here on Thursday. “The developing infrastructure in India makes it possible for transporters to reap the benefit of trucks with higher power, speed and carrying capacity. The new range from Tata Motors will meet those needs. It will also help us penetrate international markets more effectively and competitively,” said Mr Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Motors, in a statement here. The range includes multi-axle trucks, tractor-trailers, tippers, mixers, and special application vehicles. The 10- to75-tonne trucks with 150-560 hp are fitted with air-conditioned cabins. DebutThe commercial launch of these trucks in India is scheduled during July-September. They will debut in South Korea, South Africa, the SAARC countries and the Middle-East by the end of the fiscal. Mr Prakash M. Telang, Executive Director, Tata Motors, said that the company had invested nearly Rs 1,000 crore in product development and plant capacity for this range. The trucks will be made at the Jamshedpur facility and at Gunsan in South Korea. The company expects international volumes to be at par with numbers in India. The Jamshedpur plant can produce 55,000 units initially, going up to 1.5 lakh units should the need arise. Tata Motors is also looking at setting up a 300-acre vendor park nearby for which talks are on with the Jharkhand Government. “The World Truck range will have a strong role to play in the recovery of commercial vehicle market,” Mr Ravi Pisharody, Vice-President, Sales & Marketing, Commercial Vehicles said. They will retail at a premium to the existing range of Tata trucks. “We are bringing trucks in India to the levels of developed countries. The guiding principle of the World Truck is better operating economy with higher driver comfort, higher tonnage, more mileage and longer engine life,” he added. Technical expertiseTechnical expertise for the World Truck came in from Tata Motors European Technical Centre, said Mr R. Ramakrishnan, Head of Sales, Commercial Vehicles, Tata Motors. “We drew inputs from customers worldwide. The truck is truly ‘World Truck’ as the cabin is designed in Italy, the gearbox is sourced from Europe and the US while the chassis is from Mexico. “The World Truck can hit 100 km/hour, which means, it can travel 700-800 km a day,” he added.
