Recession blues: ISB now hires its own students

“This is just one of the ways in which ISB has been trying to help the students tide over the impact of recession.”

G. Naga Sridhar

Hyderabad, May 28 The recession-hit students of Indian School of Business, who could not get job offers in campus placements earlier this year, have found a new employer — ISB itself.

In what could probably be seen as a goodwill gesture, ISB has absorbed some 10 students from the Class of 2009 so far in various roles such senior managers, assistant/associate directors of research centres and departments.

The remuneration package offered for the students ranges from Rs 8 lakh to over Rs 10 lakh with an initial employment period of three years.

“This is just one of the ways in which ISB has been trying to help the students tide over the impact of recession,” a senior functionary of ISB told Business Line. Perhaps for the first time in history of ISB, about 100 students, out of the 437 who graduated from the Class of 2009 in April this year, could not get a job offer in the campus placements programme because of the recession.

“Last week, a special job fair was conducted for these students, in which over 30 students could find a job. Still there are over 50 students who are awaiting placements,” he said.

The main reason for the problem was a marked decline in the number of openings this year at almost all corporates.

“In fact, those who could find placements also had little or no choice as the number of offers per student has seen a decline,” he said.

The ISB Board of Governance, headed by Mr Rajat Gupta, has assured the students that they will “do their best and use their good offices in the industry to get the students placed.”

A task force has been formed for this. Those still without jobs would be allowed to participate in the placement programme for the current year, he added.
