Our Bureau

Bangalore, June 4 The Karnataka Government has urged the Centre to consider a special grant of Rs 8,000 crore to meet the infrastructure needs of Bangalore.

At his meeting with the Union Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, , the Chief Minister, Mr B.S. Yeddyurappa, said Bangalore required an infrastructure investment of Rs 36,000 crore, of which the resource gap is estimated at Rs 16,000 crore. In a statement, the Chief Minister said the State would use the funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission and State Finance Commission grants to partially bridge this gap in the next two or three years.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of States facing funds crunch in view of the drop in growth rates, affecting both State tax receipts as well as transfers from the Centre. The Chief Ministers from Opposition-ruled States, have expressed apprehension they might be discriminated against.
