Centre promises help in market development of Coir Board

Kochi, June 4

The Union Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Mr Dinsha J. Patel, has assured the Coir Board of all possible help from his Ministry for the market development of the labour-intensive coir sector, both in the export and domestic sectors.

This assurance was given to the Coir Board Chairman, Mr V.S. Vijayaraghavan, when he met the Minister on his assuming charge in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Mr Vijayaraghavan presented to the Minister a detailed scenario of the coir industry and its scope of reaching an ambitious export target of Rs 1,000 crore by the end of the 11th Plan (2007-2012) from the present level of Rs 634 crore achieved during 2008-09, against the target of Rs 600 crore for the year, despite the global economic downturn.

The Board, he said, had drawn up an export strategy to create greater visibility for the coir and coir products, taking advantage of the declaration by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) 2009 as International Year of Natural Fibre.

The golden jubilee celebrations of the Coir Research Institute coinciding with the third edition of India International Coir Fair coming up in Alapuzha later this year, will also be treated as an opportunity for greater exports of coir and coir products.

Mr Vijayaraghavan also met the Union Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, and the Commerce Minister, Mr Anand Sharma, to seek their support in raising the financial outlay and market support from the respective ministries.
