Illegal money issue to be vigorously pursued

Our Bureau

New Delhi, June 4 The President, Ms Pratibha Patil, today told Parliament that the Government would “vigorously pursue” the issue of illegal money stashed by Indian citizens in overseas numbered bank accounts. This would be done in coordination with countries concerned, she added.

This is the first time that the existence of such secret accounts has been acknowledged by the Head of State. The Bharatiya Janata Party had made this a campaign issue in the general elections.

Ms Patil’s remarks has raised expectations among the citizenry that the new Government would walk the talk on the matter and retrieve the Indian money stashed away illegally in Switzerland and other countries.
