Mumbai, June 5 Siemens Ltd plans to open a factory in Aurangabad this fiscal to produce industrial goods for the transportation sector, according to Dr Armin Bruck, Managing Director.

While there were no details on the investments planned, he said that the company’s spend for the power segment was now complete.

Dr Bruck was speaking to reporters on Friday at the inaugural of the company’s Rs 40-crore high voltage gas insulated switchgear (GIS) plant in Waluj. GIS is an advanced form of switchgear which needs very little area to operate in quite unlike a conventional one.

The new unit will cater to the Rs 2,000-crore GIS market, which is growing at 25 per cent annually.

Spread across 5,000 square metres, it will make switchgear products of 72.5 kV, 145 kV and 245 kV and then go in for production of 420 kV switchgears in the next phase. With localisation levels of 75 per cent, the products will be used both here and overseas.

Mr A.K. Dixit, CEO, Energy Sector, said that production would stabilise at 400 units in the first year, going up to 900 units subsequently.

“As GIS takes up less space, sizable orders are expected from real estate and SEZ developers,” he said.

Siemens Ltd is the flagship listed company in India which is a leading provider of industry and infrastructure solutions with a business volume aggregating about Rs 11,800 crore as on September 2008.

It operates in the core business areas of industry, energy and healthcare.
