ITC forestry initiative to benefit tribals in AP

Kolkata, June 10 The social forestry initiative of ITC Ltd, which got registered under the Clean Development Mechanism, would contribute positively to the livelihoods of the tribals and rural poor in 193 villages in Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh, according to a company press release.

The benefits of the project activity, which will earn 57,792 CERs (certified emission reductions), will be passed on to the tribals post expenses incurred for the CDM project.

The project ‘Reforestation of severely degraded landmass in Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh’, would be implemented through NGOs in close partnership with local communities, the release said.

The project makes a significant contribution by creating a carbon sink of 3070.19 hectares, which not only helps in sequestration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, but also creates multiple benefits.
