New Delhi, June 10 The Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr Murli Deora, has said that a programme to expeditiously construct trunk pipelines to carry natural gas to new areas should be taken up.

Holding a meeting with the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), he underlined that the Ministry and the regulator should jointly endeavour to ensure the same.

Production of domestic natural gas would double in the coming months.

The availability of LNG is also expanding.

“It is necessary to ensure that the gas so available should expeditiously reach areas where it is to be consumed,” he said.

According to an official release, the Minister also discussed the future line of action to be taken by the PNGRB.

The Minister felt that attempts should be made to seek solutions for vexatious issues through consultation.

Stressing that expanding city-gas distribution was a priority for the Government, he suggested that the Ministry and the Regulator should create a roadmap to roll out City Gas Distribution Projects to more cities, synchronising with increase in production of natural gas and development of pipeline infrastructure.

Supply of CNG to transport sector and PNG to households would ensure safe, cheap, and clean fuel to the users and also reduce Government subsidy.

The meeting was also attended, among others, by the Minister of State (P&NG), Mr Jitin Prasada; the Petroleum Secretary, Mr R. S. Pandey; the PNGRB Chairperson, Mr L. Mansingh, and all the members.
