Rubber Web Extras - Commodity Markets Rubber census could reduce price volatility Our Bureau Kochi June 15 A rubber census should be initiated at the national level, which would ensure greater price stability, Dr Tharian George, Joint Director, Agriculture Economics at the Rubber Board said. A national rubber census would provide better statistics and enable more accurate prediction about rubber production and consumption trends in the economy and help reduce price volatility. Once the wild swings in prices are arrested, it would help in increasing the production and productivity of natural rubber. Speaking at the Third Annual Business Meet and Awards Function organised by Harrisons Malayalam at Kochi, Dr George said: “The volatility in the price of crude oil in the international market is another factor which decides the price of natural rubber. This, in turn, affects the futures markets.” The marked upsurge and sharp fall in crude oil prices during the last year has resulted in huge volatility in rubber prices. Speaking on the Indian Rubber Scenario: Identifying the Issues in the Era of Globalisation”, he said marked volatility in prices would be harmful to the producer and consumer of rubber. The Rs 300-crore Harrisons Malayalam, which has been successfully outsourcing operations in rubber, convened the award function to honour its top vendors. Mr Pankaj Kapoor, Managing Director of Harrisons Malayalam said: “The company is looking forward to a long-term relationship with all its business associates and vendors. HML’s presence in bought-out operations would also help in stabilising prices during the peak growing season.”
The 150-year-old Harrisons Malayalam is the single largest grower and manufacturer of rubber in India and the second largest grower of tea in South India. It has now diversified its field operations and is probably the largest corporate grower of pineapple and passion fruit in the country. The company has two state-of-art centrifuged latex factories, two crumb rubber factories, and a sole crepe factory on its rubber estates. The company, which makes all grades of natural rubber under one roof, is also a major exporter of rubber. More Stories on : Rubber | Commodity Markets
