Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, June 17 Acquisition of land for developing the 450-acre Technocity IT township near Thiruvananthapuram is expected to be completed by December this year.

According to government officials associated with the project, around 187 acres required for Phase 1 of the project have been acquired. Acquisition of the remaining 250-odd acres is expected to be through by December, they added.

When completed, the Technocity is expected to employ around 1.5 lakh people in the IT and ITES sectors.

The State Government has decided to go in for a multiple-developer strategy for setting up the Technocity. Under this policy, developers can bid for parcels of land based on their requirements, the officials explained.

Around 50 acres in the proposed Technocity will be retained for Phase 4 of the expansion of the existing Technopark Thiruvananthapuram, they added.

The Union Government has also approved the creation of an IT/ITES Special Economic Zone on 44 acres in the Technocity.

The draft master plan for the project is currently being finalised, while the process of identifying an engineering consultant for the venture is currently on, the officials added.

Land in the Technocity will also been set aside for residential purposes, an education hub and a commercial zone with hotels, multiplexes and other retail space. Space will also be earmarked for social amenities such as a hospital and a club.

Meanwhile, work on Technopark Kollam is progressing. The first phase of the Kollam IT park, which will have 1 lakh sq ft of built-up space, is scheduled to be ready by mid 2011.
