Chennai, June 16 The Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry has suggested to the Tamil Nadu Government the constitution of an industrial advisory committee and investment facilitation desk.

In a representation to the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr M.K. Stalin, SICCI which is approaching its centenary, said that it is interested in pioneering such initiatives. Sector-wise working groups would also facilitate higher investment inflow and expedite decision-making.

According to a press release from SICCI, it has also submitted a detailed report titled ‘The Agenda for comprehensive industrial growth and investment in Tamil Nadu.’ The report covers a range of issues including the need to address complex regulatory issues such as labour regulations and suggests the formation of a high-level committee to reform labour laws; creation of a petro hub in the State; infrastructure development and power supply improvement through public private partnerships and incentives to private sector; improvement in road and rail connectivity; creation of an integrated agency for urban infrastructure development, regulation and support to the construction sector.

SICCI also called for the speeding up of the development of Chennai-Bangalore industrial corridor link.

The report says the chamber has received enquiries from companies from Germany, Taiwan, Japan and Korea expressing their interest in investing in Chennai, which is the hub for auto and electronic manufacturing industries.

But they are often deemed ineligible for allotment of land in the Special Economic Zone owing to the stipulated criteria laid down by SIDCO and Tamil Nadu Guidance Bureau.

SICCI suggests that the Government may consider relaxing provisions in the eligibility criteria for land allotment.
