Outlook Industry & Economy - Automobiles Tata Elxsi sees opportunities in green technology for auto industry Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, June 17 Despite the global economic slowdown, Tata Elxsi sees significant opportunities in the automobile and aerospace sectors. Research and development (R&D) activities in the automobile industry continue, particularly in green technology, the slowdown notwithstanding, said Mr R. Natarajan, Vice-President, Automotive and Aerospace Practice, Tata Elxsi Ltd. Speaking to the media here today, he pointed out that the use of software systems in automobiles is growing, as is the demand for lower vehicular emissions and hybrid vehicles. The need for R&D in these domains, therefore, continues to grow creating an opportunity for Tata Elxsi, which works in embedded product design and R&D services for clients across the world. Tata Elxsi already works with auto companies in Europe and North America to develop green technology. And such engagements are set to grow, he said. Green technologyThe company is also talking to Indian auto companies about R&D in green technology, he added, but declined to reveal further details. Another area where the company sees an opportunity is software standards for the automobile sector, Mr Natarajan said. Software standards for the sector are likely to become mandatory in a few years. Tata Elxsi is well placed to bag R&D projects in this area given its involvement in AUTOSAR (Automotive Open System Architecture), an open and standardised architecture for automotive software. The company is developing intellectual property in this domain, he revealed. Similarly, in the aerospace sector R&D efforts continue, especially in areas related to safety and security, he pointed out. The company believes that its aerospace practice can tap opportunities in this sector. No downsizingDeclaring that there has been no downsizing at Tata Elxsi, Mr Natarajan, said the company recruited 650-700 fresh graduates this year. Of this, 150 are for the Thiruvananthapuram centre which does a lot of work in the automobile and aerospace domains, he said. Overall, the company does not expect a significant fall in revenues this fiscal, he added. More Stories on : Outlook | Automobiles | Software | Environment
