Corridors for heavy traffic

Madurai, June 21

The President of the Indian Road Congress (IRC), Mr D.B. Deshpande, has suggested construction of dedicated corridors for heavy vehicular traffic across the country. Addressing the 188th mid-term council meeting of IRC, held recently at Kodaikanal, he said a mix of traffic would reduce speed and the risk of accidents. Toll could be collected, based on weight of vehicles and the distance travelled. Private sector participation is necessary but they need to be strictly monitored and supervised, he added. Speaking at the meet, Mr M.P. Swaminathan, State Highways Minister, said the Government has geared up to develop a comprehensive road management system with complete road asset information data base. -Our Correspondent
