DGCA strengthens aviation safety, regulatory mechanism

Our Bureau

New Delhi, June 26 The Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has strengthened its regulatory mechanism and developed a robust safety oversight system in complying with the recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

According to an official statement issued here, to meet the international safety obligations, the DGCA has implemented a corrective action plan by which the Government has approved the revival of 132 lapsed technical posts and the creation of 427.

Flight operation inspectors

The DGCA is also trying for the ad-hoc appointment of flight operations inspectors pending regular recruitment.

recommendations

The ICAO and the FAA audited the country’s safety oversight system and made recommendations in areas of technical manpower, especially in the areas of flight operations, air navigation and aerodromes; legislative framework and regulations governing aviation safety; and effective surveillance of operations and resolution of safety concerns.

The statement said that India has so far complied with 54 of the 70 recommendations of the ICAO, a specialised UN agency that audited India’s oversight programme in October 2006 under its Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme.

The DGCA is working to comply with the remaining recommendations.
