Our Bureau

New Delhi, June 26 While the domestic crude oil production continued its declining trend, natural gas output in May shot up by 18.3 per cent with production starting at Reliance Industries Ltd’s East Coast block, and coal bed methane output in West Bengal

The crude oil production dropped by 4.3 per cent during the month keeping with the trend of the last six months.

Natural gas production during the month was 3.41 billion cubic metre as against 2.88 billion cubic metre in the same month last year. The crude oil output in May dropped to 2.78 million tonnes (2.90 million tonnes). According to data released by Petroleum Ministry on Friday, the drop in crude oil production was due to a dip in output at ONGC’s Mumbai High fields by 6.5 per cent to 1.4 million tonnes in May.

The fields account for half of the domestic annual oil production.

The domestic refiners’ processing was down 4.3 per cent during the month due to shutdown of some of the refineries. The refinery production was 12.77 million tonnes (13.34 million tonnes). The refiners had a capacity utilisation of 102.5 per cent in May.

Output from Essar Oil’s refinery at Vadinar in Gujarat fell 3.4 per cent. Production from Reliance Industries’ refinery at Jamnagar also fell 6.9 per cent to 2.96 million tonnes during the month.
