Farmers may have exit route in co-op farming

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, June 30

The Andhra Pradesh Government is considering the option of offering exit route to farmers who prefer to withdraw from the cooperative farming model proposed by the State.

Briefing newspersons after the State Cabinet meeting here today, the Information Minister, Ms J. Geetha Reddy, said that the cooperative farming which the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, is promoting passionately, will be taken up as a flagship project of the new Government.

The entire Government and the Cabinet are extremely enthused about the cooperative farming approach, which goes beyond simple farming and seeks to cover fisheries, poultry, piggery, dairy and food processing, handling the production and post production related issues, she said.

The Cabinet deliberated this issue at length with most ministers contributing their views. It is proposed to formulate modalities at the earliest and take up the project, she said.

As per initial proposal, two villages in every district would be taken up for cooperative farming and developed as model farm centres. It is not a compulsory move but optional for the farmers. Significantly, the Government is also working out a way to offer exit route to those who opt out of the cooperative. The details are yet to be worked out.

Given the advantages the cooperative farming techniques can bring to the farmers, the State Government is also looking at dairy cooperatives with about 1,000 animals.

In another decision, the State Cabinet has approved a bill that extends the term of committees in the Andhra Pradesh Rural Electrification Cooperative Societies. This will cover cooperatives in Kuppam in Chittoor, Cheepurupalli in Vizianagaram and Anakapalli in Visakhapatnam.
