AI employees hope salaries will be paid today

Our Bureau

Mumbai, July 2 Nearly 11,000 Air India employees, scheduled to get their salaries on Friday, are now keeping their fingers crossed that they are paid on time.

“We have been told by our accounts department that as of now they have not got any instructions to give salaries tomorrow (Friday). If they do not come by 1 p.m. we will stage an all-India two-hour protest,” said Mr George Abraham, General Secretary, Aviation Industry Employees Guild (AIEG).

The Air Corporation Employees Union (ACEU) will also join AIEG in its demonstration on Friday. “Our 12,000 members and 9,000 members of AIEG will participate in this walkout. It will include the engineering, cabin crew and other technical departments,” said a senior ACEU member.

Staff grades

Of the total workforce of 31,000 employees, 20,000 work in the lower grades. It was decided at a meeting on June 28, between the management and unions, that 11,000 of Air India’s clerical cadre including 600 junior crew members would be paid on Friday. Another meeting was planned on July 4 to discuss when the balance staffers would get their salaries for June.

Meanwhile, an airline spokesperson said on Thursday, “Air India is working towards making payment to lower grade employees as finalised with the unions last week.

Since wages are effected through ECS (electronic clearing system), certain formalities are required to be complied with and payment advice is being sent to the banks of eligible employees.”

The ACEU and AIEG have also decided to stay away from the turnaround committee meeting scheduled for Friday. This panel, with representatives of the management and unions, had been formed to identify areas which would generate for the cash-starved carrier.
