AIR, DD programme officers protest career stagnation

G. Chandrashekhar

Mumbai, July 2

All India Radio is heard by millions of people all over the country, while many more millions watch Doordarshan television. But the grievances of their own programme officers currently numbering over 1,000 across the country, have gone unheard.

The highly qualified and talented programme officers recruited as Group ‘B’officers of All-India Service by the Union Public Service Commission are stuck at the entry level for 20 long years, according to the Association of UPSC Recruited Programme Officers of AIR and DD.

Batches from 1988 are stagnating in the same post for 20 years without any promotion or even assured career progression that a Government officer is entitled to, a press release from the association pointed out. AIR and DD programme officers across the country observed token satyagraha today by wearing black badges and holding gate meetings in their respective offices.

Ironically, the minimum qualification for a programme officer with AIR or DD is post-graduation, while it is only graduation for an IAS officer. This anomaly has virtually snuffed out the careers of over 1,000 officers in AIR and DD, an official complained.
