BSNL launches IPTV in Ahmedabad; Internet in 3 months

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), in association with Smart Digivision Pvt Ltd, has launched the Interactive personalised television and video services (IPTV) to which will be added the Internet in the next three months in what an official said could well be the onset of the 4-G age, even before 3-G has become available across India. All Internet operations, beginning with e-mail, would be made available on TV sets through IPTV, and the new remote control device would be useable like a key-board, according to Mr Satya Pal, Chief General Manager, BSNL, and Mr Surendra Lunia, Director, SmartDigivision.

Ahmedabad has a current BSNL subscriber base of 4.95 lakh. Using a broadband connection and fixed line from BSNL and a MyWay set-top-box, customers of the telecom behemoth can now connect to a set of interactive personalised features via their home television. MyWay IPTV services is now available to all the BSNL customers in 54 cities across India, including commercially in 23 cities.

While DTH and cable are limited to broadcast services, MyWay IPTV offering claims to take entertainment to a new level with features such as video, music, education and games-on-demand, parental control, and interactive user interface that provides scroll and click set of windows for selecting services and viewing account information.

MyWay IPTV is soon adding services such as personalised stock ticker, interactive viewing, email and chat right onscreen without the added cost of a personal computer and without interrupting TV viewing, travel information and weather reports.

For BSNL customers, the new facility would be available in two options: Purchase and rental model.
