New Delhi, July 3 In a boost to tiger conservation efforts, the Centre has approved a proposal for implementing the tripartite agreement between the Environment Ministry, State Governments and tiger reserves.

The proposal for the MoUs, cleared by the Cabinet on Friday, aims at strengthening tiger conservation initiatives and develops approaches to strengthen efforts for conserving tigers in the identified reserves and other tiger-bearing forests of the country.

On the proposal, the Minister of State for Environment, Mr Jairam Ramesh, said, “Over the next month, we are hoping to sign these MoUs with 17 states and 37 Project tiger reserves. It will ensure better utilisation of funds and increases accountability and responsibility for all three parties.

Funds are now being disbursed by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) under a pact with states for protecting the animals under the Project Tiger.

However, under the new agreement, tiger reserves will also be made accountable for fund utilisation given that many states had failed to fully spend money provided by the Centre.
