Cabinet nod for S. Asian University

New Delhi, July 3

As part of the country's commitment towards the establishment of the South Asian University, the Cabinet has approved payment of India's contribution of Rs 1,194 crore to the university. This is about 79 per cent of the total cost of the full establishment of the university until 2014. India will disburse Rs 45 crore in the first tranche to ensure that the university is operational by July-August 2010. It will be the first international university to be hosted by India. It will be a non-state, non-profit self- governing international educational institution. The jurisdiction of the university shall extend to the whole of India and to campuses and centres established in the SAARC region. Almost 100 acres next to the Indira Gandhi National Open University is being acquired by the Ministry of External Affairs from the DDA for leasing to the university. - Our Bureau
