Industry & Economy - Budget
Bring more clarity to SEZ policies

With the new Government, we expect the economy to work in much more liberal way.

As a need of the hour, public spending in infrastructure sectors such as roads and ports must go up, as they create employment.

Infrastructure and housing projects and employment are the key themes for this Budget. The Government must help stimulate adequate jobs.

The Government should bring more clarity on the policies such as those on SEZs and improve the turnaround time to approve new projects.

Tax rationalisation is the other top item on the wish list. VAT, Cenvat cuts are expected to a larger extent and also the reduction in custom duties on various goods.

We expect a national toll policy and more focus on the securitisation of toll-ways. To promote power generating companies, tax holiday should be extended after March 30, 2010.

As far as hospitality sector is concerned the upcoming tax-holidays are restricted to the five-star hotel chains, which should be extended to small joints/restaurants.

Jayant Mhaiskar, Chairman & Managing Director, Indian Hospitality Pvt Ltd.
