People New Indian Envoy to China New Delhi, July 4 The Indian High Commissioner to Singapore, Dr S. Jaishankar, is likely to be appointed as the next Indian Ambassador to China. The post in Beijing has fallen vacant as the current Indian Ambassador to China, Ms Nirupama Rao, has been appointed as the new Foreign Secretary. She will take over from Mr Shiv Shankar Menon when he retires at the end of this month. A career diplomat, Dr Jaishankar was appointed as India’s High Commissioner to Singapore in November 2006. Dr Jaishankar served, immediately before his present appointment, as the head of the Americas Division in the Ministry of External Affairs, and earlier as Ambassador in Prague, Deputy Chief of Mission in Tokyo, and as Press Secretary to the President of India. He has also worked in different capacities in Indian Embassies in Washington DC, Moscow, Colombo and Budapest, as well as in the Ministry of External Affairs. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1977. — Our Bureau More Stories on : People | Foreign Relations
