Diversification CPCL desalination plant to release 260 lakh litres water
Our Bureau Chennai, July 4 Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd today formally inaugurated its Rs 244-crore, 5.8 MGD sea water desalination plant. The plant takes sea water and processes it into water fit for industrial use. The cost of the water works out to 3 paise, half of what CPCL was paying Chennai Water Supply until about a month ago. The project makes CPCL self-sufficient in water and thereby releases 260 lakh litres of water to consumers in the city. Importantly, the project guarantees that the refinery shall not be shut down because of drought, as it happened in 2000. CPCL had then incurred a loss of Rs 70 crore because the refinery could not be run for a couple of months. The plant was inaugurated today by the Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister, Mr M. K. Stalin, in the presence of the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr Murli Deora, and the Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel. In his address, Mr Stalin called for a revival of the southern gas grid and expediting the K-G basin to Tuticorin gas pipeline project. The project has been built in such a manner as would be easy to scale up its capacity to 10 million gallons a day, with a little additional investment. ATF pipelineAnother project that was inaugurated today by Mr Patel was a Rs 49-crore, 95 km pipeline that will carry aviation fuel from CPCL’s Manali refinery to the Chennai airport, via a circuittouching Sriperumbudur. The pipeline will take around 200 trucks off the roads and reduce handling costs for CPCL. Mr Patel said in his address that the pipeline passing through Sriperumbudur would benefit the second airport coming up there as it could be piped ATF.
