Shipping/Ports Strike at port reforms in Marseilles
Some 40 masked and hooded men wearing port uniforms recently invaded the Port of Marseilles Authority’s offices, swinging axes and iron bars. They were protesting against the port authority’s plan to transfer the container terminal at the port’s east dock to a private firm, a joint venture between CMA CGM and DP World. The employees of Le Havre, France’s top container port accepted the transfer of crane operators to a private stevedoring firm, thou gh after a protracted strike. But Marseilles operators are still unrelenting, even as they reportedly work for 2,000 hours a year as compared to 4,000 hours by their counterparts in several European ports. The French Government would like to loosen state control of the waterfront to enhance the competitiveness of national ports. But the fighting port employees argue that the private operators will use the economic downturn as an excuse to tear up agreements on job security and wages.
