Economic Survey

The Economic Survey fails to fully serve the purpose for which it is presented. Its main objective is to apprise the MPs and the public about the present condition of the economy to better understand the budget proposals. For that, the Economic Survey should be presented at least one week prior to the presentation of the Budget.

This year’s Economic Survey is more ideas than figures. Many of the ideas are not easy to practice. There would be many hurdles to get Rs 25,000 crore every year by disinvestment. The mainstay of the economy — agriculture — on which 60 per cent of the people depend on grew by just 1.6 per cent in 2008-2009 and accounts for less than 20 per cent of GDP. And yet there are no plans or ideas in the Economic Survey to improve agriculture. The presentation of the Economic Survey has become just an annual ritual.
