‘Upgrade skills during fiscal slowdown’

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, July 5 Industry and academia should partner to provide skill upgrade programmes for unemployed graduates, said Mr B.V.R. Mohan Reddy, Chairman and Managing Director, Infotech Enterprises Ltd.

Delivering the keynote address at an industry-academia meet, Employment Opportunities, Impact of Recession on Students and How to Overcome it, here on Saturday, Mr Reddy said the Government should also involve itself in keeping the unemployed “busy” to avoid social complications.

IT Hiring

Though the hiring in IT industry was likely to come down by over a half this year, hiring was still on, he said. “The recruitment in IT industry will be over 80,000 this year.

Though this is lower than last year, no other country is now hiring at this pace.”

The public sector would continue to spur growth in job opportunities.

“Out of a total 20 million jobs in the country, only 7.5 million jobs are in the private sector.

There is still enormous opportunity for job creation,” he said.

‘Polytechnics neglected’

Dr D.N. Reddy, Vice-Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), said there was a neglect of polytechnic colleges and Industrial Training Institutes.

Only 9.4 per cent of engineering graduates were going for higher studies, he observed.

Remuneration

Prof Sadagopan, Director, International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore, said students should not be driven by remuneration packages while looking for employment.

“We, as teachers, should not allow our institutes to join the race for high remuneration for our students,” he said.

In a period of economic slowdown, loyalty to an employer and company would give rewards, he added.

The meeting was jointly organised by Globarena, JNTU and Nasscom.
