Railway budget, a mixed bag

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, July 5 The Railway Budget has drawn a mixed reaction from the Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association (SIEMA), Coimbatore, which, while welcoming various passenger-friendly announcements, is disappointed that some of the long pending needs of the passengers of Coimbatore have been neglected.

In a statement, Mr Jayakumar Ramdass, President, SIEMA, regretted that the requests made by SIEMA for an overnight train from Coimbatore to Bangalore, upgradation of Coimbatore railway station, more trains to cities like Mumbai, Pune etc., passenger trains to Mettupalayam, Tiruppur, Pollachi, Erode and Palghat, construction of over bridges at Eachanari and Avarampalayam, introduction of Jana Sathapthi express between Coimbatore and Kumbakonam and trains between Coimbatore – Tirupathi and Coimbatore – Thiruvananthapuram have been ignored.

However, he welcomed the move to spare the passenger and freight traffic from any fare hike. He welcomed the introduction of 12 non-stop, point-to-point long distance trains.
