The Hindu Business Line : 1,500 ITIs, 5,000 skill centres likely to come up on PPP basis

New Delhi, July 5 The Government expects the process of setting up 1,500 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and 5,000 skill development centres to kick-start in the next eight months. A Cabinet note for this will be sent by the Labour Ministry in August-end on the required corpus and the respective role of various stakeholders. It is likely to be built on a public private partnership basis with funding being made partly by the Central Government, the States and by private partnerships.

The ITIs and skill development centres are a part of the National Mission for Skill Development announced in February.

“We are evaluating various models for setting up ITIs and skill development centres. A Cabinet note will be sent by August-end. Once the funds are sanctioned and the various models decided, it should be done in eight months,” Ms Sudha Pillai, Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, told Business Line at the sidelines of a Employees Provident Fund Organisation meeting.

There was also a meeting between the Labour Ministry officials and the Finance Ministry last week to discuss the models being worked out to execute the plan.

“Some State governments are offering free land whereas others have free buildings, which can be used for such skill development initiatives. So we may have different models for different States,” she added.

The States that have shown active interest in the programme include Bihar, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.
