Now, an OS for Netbooks from Google

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, July 8 Google has revealed its plans to come out with an operating system (OS), the Google Chrome Operating System.

Terming it an ‘attempt to re-think what operating systems should be’, Mr Sundar Pichai, Vice-President, Product Management, and Mr Linus Upson, Engineering Director, made the announcement on the company’s official blog.

The company is already in talks with its partners and first products sporting the OS will be available to consumers by the second half of 2010. Initially targeted at netbooks, the operating system is being designed to run a whole range of computers, including full-scale desktops.

At present, the netbook market is dominated by Windows XP and Linux operating systems. Though reports of an impending release of a Mac netbook keep surfacing from time to time, Apple never spoke of such plans.

The announced OS would be open source and lightweight with speed, simplicity and security as the key elements. To achieve this, “We are going back to basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates,” the bloggers posted, “ It should just work” .
