CII’s standards portal to simplify Indo-US trade

Our Bureau

New Delhi, July 8 The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on Tuesday launched the ‘Standards Portal’ offering information on standards in 10 key sectors, including automotive, electronics, gem and jewellery and textiles.

Developed in collaboration with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the portal aims to support bilateral trade and investor relations between the US and India.

“The portal enables Indian and American companies to understand each other’s standards,” said Mr Venu Srinivasan, President, CII. He added that this will lead to a much greater interaction in terms of trade and commerce.

“It is important for the US and India to effectively communicate the standards, regulations and conformance requirements used in each country. Increased communication will ensure that each country’s policies do not create conflictive or duplicative requirements, encouraging best practices all around,” said Mr Mallikarjun Kharge, Minister for Labour and Employment.

Speaking at the launch, Mr S. Joe Bhatia, President & CEO, ANSI, said that the portal is a culmination of the process started with the MoU between ANSI, BIS and CII in December last year.

“The portal is meant to disseminate information in a very easy manner,” said Mr Yashwant Bhave, Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution. Since US is India’s most important trading partner, this exchange of information will help both US and Indian industries, he added.

According to Mr Bhatia, Mr Bhave has been touted as the next head of the International Standards Organisation (ISO). Mr Bhave is currently running unopposed for this top post, said Mr Bhatia.
