Coonoor tea auctions fetch Rs 151 cr in H1

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, July 9 Producers who sold their teas through the 26 auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association held in the first half of this year earned Rs 17.91 crore more than in the same period of 2008.

An analysis of the market reports shows that this happened despite the volumes sold dropping because of the higher unit price fetched.

Between January and June, the volume sold dropped to 1.96 crore kg from 2.37 crore kg in the same months of 2008. But, every kg of tea sold fetched Rs 20.87 more to average Rs 76.95.

Consequently, the overall earnings increased to Rs 150.82 crore from Rs 132.91 crore. The increase in earnings would have been far higher if the volume sold matched last year’s level. In 2008, both the volume sold and the price fetched were higher than 2007.

All-round rise

The increasing trend was seen in respect of both the orthodox and CTC variety. In the case of CTC, which constituted the bulk of the teas sold, volumes dropped to 1.81 crore kg from 2.21 crore kg.
