Pearl and Gem Fair begins in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, July 9

With South India accounting for nearly 40 per cent of the country’s gold jewellery trade, traders see more opportunities to expand their presence in the region.

Inaugurating the Hyderabad Jewellery, Pearl and Gem Fair 2009 on Thursday, the Andhra Pradesh Minister for Tourism, Dr J. Geetha Reddy, said that the fair has become an ideal platform for exhibitors to showcase the latest trends and also provide an opportunity to consumers to interact with them. The fair has over 130 exhibitors, including some international and over 6,000 registrations.

The Managing Director of UBM India, Mr M. Gandhi, said that despite the volatile price of gold, Southern states continue to show signs of year-on-year growth in jewellery consumption.

Hosting some of the large jewellery houses in the country, South India could explore opportunities to step up trade in other parts of the country.
