Outlook JSW Energy scouting for partners for boiler venture
Mr S.S. Rao, JMD and Chief Executive Officer, JSW Energy Ltd M. Ramesh Chennai, July 10 JSW Energy, which has tied up with Toshiba of Japan for producing turbine-generators for power plants, wants to get into boiler manufacture too and is looking for partners. The unlisted entity of the JSW group, which aims for a place among the leading power producers in the country, is in talks with some suitors for the boiler venture. The talks, however, are in preliminary stages, Mr S.S. Rao, Joint Managing Director, JSW Energy, told Business Line. When it happens, JSW will join a growing list of power equipment manufacturers in the country. Apart from BHEL and Cethar Vessels, a number of others have announced their intention to enter this field. They include: L&T-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Thermax-Babcock & Wilcox and BGR Energy-Foster Wheeler. JSW Energy will be the only ‘integrated’ player, being both in power equipment production and generation. Generation portfolioIn generation, the company expects to have a portfolio of 3,400 MW by December 2010. At present, it has only a 300 MW plant at Tornagallu, near Bellary in Karnataka. But many of its other projects are cruising towards commissioning, Mr Rao said. Another 300 MW unit at Tornagallu is expected to be commissioned in August. A subsidiary of the company is putting up a 1,200 MW plant at Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, at a cost of Rs 4,500 crore. The first of the four 300 MW units is scheduled to be commissioned by March 2010. All the other units will be operational by December 2010. Ratnagiri projectThe company is planning a mega project at Ratnagiri – a 3,200-MW power station comprising four supercritical units of 800 MW each. Another subsidiary of JSW Energy, Raj West Power Ltd, is putting up a 1,050 MW lignite-based power project in Rajasthan. The first of the eight 135 MW units will go on stream in August. This plant will have boilers of CFBC technology, an upcoming technology in the country better suited for lignite-based plants. Both the plants at Tornagallu and at Barmer, Rajasthan use Chinese equipment. Mr Rao said the 300 MW unit at Tornagallu, that is currently operational, is working fine. Mr Rao said that neither JSW Energy nor its subsidiaries plan to go in for either an IPO or a PE infusion in the near future. JSW Energy would prefer that the plants are first up and running, so that it could get good valuations.
