Foods & Food Processing Agri-Biz & Commodities - Storage States - Other States Central aid for cold chain storage Processing level in the food processing sector is up from 6% to 10% Value addition is up from 20% to 26% in the last 5 yrs Level of wastage of agricultural food items is estimated at Rs 50,000 cr Our Bureau New Delhi, July 10 The Minister of Food Processing Industries, Mr Subodh Kant Sahay, told Parliament on Thursday that cold chain storage, value addition and preservation infrastructure would get financial assistance from the Government as part of the Eleventh Five Year Plan. Schemes have been drawn up for financial assistance in the form of grants of 50 per cent of the total cost of setting up plants in general areas and 75 per cent in the North-East. The initiatives are planned at filling the gaps in the supply chain and strengthening cold chain infrastructure. Agencies of the Government such as National Horticulture Board, Agricultural Processing Food Products Development Authority, National Cooperative Development Corporation and State governments would also provide assistance for cold storages under their respective schemes. Processing level in the food processing sector has gone up from 6 per cent to 10 per cent and value addition has gone up from 20 per cent to 26 per cent in the last five years. Level of wastage of agricultural food items is estimated at Rs 50,000 crore. Most of this is attributed to lack of post-harvest infrastructure. According to the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection, in the Ministry of Agriculture’s latest data there are 5,136 cold storages in the country with total capacity of 2.33 crore tonnes.
