President alerts nation of poor monsoon

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Aug. 14 The President, Ms Pratibha Devisingh Patil, told the country to be prepared for the impact on agriculture and the availability of water, from the less than normal monsoon.

The Government was taking all possible steps to deal with it, said the President in her address to the nation on the eve of the 63rd Independence Day.

Ms Patil also suggested India focus on new areas of growth to continue upward trajectory, even as we focus on areas of proven strength and on building of infrastructure throughout the country and rural development to tackle the challenges from the global slowdown.

“We have a large domestic market and inherent strengths to drive the economy forward,” said Ms Patil. The need for strengthening academic institutions and research facilities and a pursuit of excellence in R&D, was also emphasised upon.

While the world expects India to be one of the largest economies social empowerment must also be a priority, added Ms Patil.

She pointed out ‘The passage of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Bill’, and said it was a landmark legislation towards achieving the goal of universal education.

“The National Mission on Empowerment of Women will socially and economically empower women – 50 per cent of our population to play an active role in nation building,” she added.
